Treasures of the Phippen celebrates the best of the Museum collection

August 8 – September 20, 2009
Members Reception, August 7 from 5 to 7 p.m.

A selection of outstanding paintings and sculpture celebrating the heritage, history and legends influencing American Western art from the Phippen Permanent Collection will be on display during the upcoming Treasures of the Phippen Collection exhibition, including a number of new acquisitions and donations. Comprised of selections from the extensive permanent collection, these “treasures” represent the finest examples of traditional Western Art.

Many works that have not been featured for some time will be shown, such as work by Ken Riley, Mark Swanson and Robert Woodcock. The Museum’s collection features some unique pieces by Frank Polk, and other local sculptors that have not been on view for some time will be displayed to delight our visitors and members who celebrate the ranching way of life and Western art.

The Estate of Gladys Tuttle provided a wonderful selection of Olaf Wieghorst etchings and drawings that have not been on full display for some time in the Main Gallery. One popular oil painting that has not graced the walls of the Museum for some time is Perkinsville Station by Robert Woodcock.

The new acquisitions to the Permanent Collection by George Phippen CA will remain on view, along with some of the more familiar pieces. New donations of work by Ray Swanson CA will remain in the Cultural Hall during this exhibition for visitors to continue to enjoy as they visit the Permanent Replica of Ray’s studio. Over 80 paintings and sculptures that are familiar to local patrons and others that have not been out of our Permanent Collection storage for some time will be featured for this exhibition.

The Members Reception will be held on August 7 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Museum, and a walk-through for this exhibit is scheduled that same day at 10 a.m.

An exciting Children’s Workshop entitled “Map Legends!” will allow young artists to discover the lost art of mapmaking while they create antiqued watercolor maps to lost old mines or hidden treasures. This special workshop will be held August 22 at 1 p.m. in the Cultural Hall of the Museum.

Come celebrate the beauty of American Western art at its finest during Treasures of the Phippen Collection. For additional information, please call the Museum at (928) 778-1385.
